Independence Day

Wed 10 November 2010

Happy Independence Day. On this day in 1953, Cambodia ended 90 years as a French protectorate.

The Cambodian TV channel had a live broadcast from Phnom Pehn of King Norodom Sihamoni progressing along a long line of subjects. They were lined three deep along the sidewalk, and he seemed to touch hands with every one of them as he passed. An assistant kept the sun off him with a large golden umbrella. I'm surprised to see royalty make that kind of contact. I'd expect some quick photo-ops with schoolchildren and war heros. It took quite a while for him to finish.

The progress ended at the Independence Monument with what looked like a high ranking group of officers and civilians. The king lit the monument's flame at the beginning of the ceremony, and will extinguish it after three days.
